Trajectory-mapped Ozonesonde dataset for the Stratosphere and Troposphere
The Trajectory-mapped Ozonesonde dataset for the Stratosphere and Troposphere
(TOST) is a global three-dimensional (i.e. latitude, longitude, altitude)
climatology of tropospheric and stratospheric ozone, derived from the WOUDC
global ozone sounding record by trajectory mapping. Approximately 77,000
ozonesonde profiles from some 116 stations worldwide since 1965 were used. To
fill in the spatial domain, 96-hour forward and backward trajectory
calculations were used to map the ozone measurements, at 1-km altitude
intervals, to a number of other locations. Calculations were done with version
4.8 of the HYSPLIT model (Draxler and Hess, 1997; 1998), developed by the NOAA
Air Resources Laboratory (NOAA ARL). The meteorological input for the
trajectory model was the global NOAA-NCEP/NCAR (National Centers for
Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research) pressure
level reanalysis data set. Several versions are presented: a tropospheric
climatology and a separate stratospheric climatology, for use in dynamic
models which have an independently determined tropopause, and a standard
troposphere-stratosphere climatology which necessarily includes (or implies) a
climatological tropopause. Both are available in altitude relative to sea
level or to ground level. More details are found in Tarasick et al. (2010);

The folder entitled tropospheric_climatology contains the folder
TROPOSPHERIC_OZONE_MAPS with plots of
- The mean ozone value at 1-km intervals
- The mean ozone value at 1-km intervals with smoothing to fill in data gaps
- The standard deviation of the mean ozone value
- The standard deviation/mean ratio
- The error of the mean
- Error of the mean/mean

The folder entitled TROPOSPHERIC_OZONE_DATA has the corresponding data files
and the folders entitled stratospheric_climatology and
stratosphere_troposphere_climatology have similar data for the stratosphere
and for both stratosphere and troposphere respectively. The folder entitled
tropospheric_column_climatology has plots of tropospheric column ozone as
calculated by integrating the smoothed fields, to the NCEP mean tropopause
height or to the level at which ozone reaches 150 ppbv, whichever comes first.
