From: Gerrie [coetzee@weathersa.co.za] Sent: October 8, 2003 8:36 AM To: 'Mike Proffitt' Cc: 'Robert D Evans'; 'Len Barrie'; Karel Vanicek; Pierre Viatte - Meteo Swiss; Wafik Shrobiem; Edward Hare (WOUDC) Subject: Maun Operational Dobson#15 Dear Dr. M Proffitt Cc Dr. Len Barrie, Dr. Robert Evans, Dr K Vanicek, Dr Pierre Viatte, Dr Wafik Shrobiem Cc Ed Hare -WOUDC Finally: It is our pleasure to officially report: 1. Confirmation that the MeteoSuisse donated Dobson #15 was finally "installed" at Maun Botswana, with the first total ozone observation conducted on "World Ozone Day", 16 September 2003. 2. Me. Agnes Phahlane and Mr. D Esterhuyse from our Service spent four days in which intensive training was conducted, including taking care of the instrument, lamp calibrations, Q Tables, reference lamp tests, data processing with the very appropriate Czech Dobson Software, procedures of data submission to WOUDC, etc. etc. Overall the Maun #15, Total Ozone observations are more or less based on our own measurement routine/program found at Irene and Springbok. Umkehr observations for the moment are not included, but indeed something that could be addressed at a later stage. The Botswana Meteorological staff was very enthusiastic, and there is no reason that the newly established station will not establish itself within the WMO GOO3OS network as we all hope and expect. 3. Please, also find attached few photographs of the installation, which will give you the opportunity to sense this new and unique station conditions. The photographs with courtesy from Mr. D Esterhuyse. 4. For the next few months, we shall work as closely as possible with Maun Dobson #15, also to assess the progress and data quality until such time that Dobson #15 Maun has developed its own confidence and independence. Telephone and Fax connections are possible, and plans for email are at and advanced stage. The facility itself still needs a few additions. Air –condition just needs connected to the power supply. 5. I also would like to mention that it is of the utmost importance that Maun Dobson #15, Botswana, now also enters the African and World Dobson community, and there is no better way than to start with the forthcoming Dobson IC- Egypt event being planned for March 2004. We should keep this in mind, as preparations are starting. (Mike thanks for the email this morning and we shall assist where possible with details for IC-E) Let me thus leave you just with the above “great news” for the moment. Best regards Gerrie Coetzee (PS No1) J Bob – Many thanks for the Arosa, Dobson Ad Hoc minutes. I still need to respond to you. (PS No2 ) The Historical first Dobson Total Ozone Measurement.
