STN 174 (Lindenberg, Germany) Ozonesonde Report ----------------------------------------------- From 1975-1992 DWD-MOL used to launch a sonde called OSE. This sonde was manufactured in the former GDR and was very similar to a Brewer-Mast-sonde. These sondes used to work with the radiosonde RKS(MRZ), which were produced in Russia. The measurment cycle of these sondes was not continious. DWD-MOL received informations about a specific component for a period of twenty to thirty seconds, i.e. 20 sec temperature, 20 sec humidity, 20 sec fix value, 20 sec ozone and then 20 sec temperature again and so on. In 1990, DWD-MOL determined a new pump correction factor for OSE sondes (lab-examinated by Steinhagen and Goersdorf): pressure pump-cor-old pump-cor-new 1000 1.000 1.029 500 1.000 1.037 300 1.000 1.044 200 1.000 1.046 100 1.010 1.051 50 1.035 1.076 30 1.065 1.123 20 1.092 1.199 10 1.170 1.388 5 1.300 1.686 From March 1992 to July 1992 DWD-MOL used to launch both types of sondes in parallel, ECC and OSE sondes, to establish the differences in measurements between these types. In 1994 DWD-MOL corrected the ozone measurements from 1975 to 1992 (for the OSE sondes) by recalculation of all launches with a new pump correction factor. Due to this recalculation, it was determined that the differences between the OSE and ECC sondes were minimal, in vertical profiles. This result was examinated by 9 tandem-soundings of both OSE and ECC sondes. The corrected dataset for OSE-data is marked with the commented notation: "with pump correction values 1990/94". Since 01. Apr 1992 DWD-MOL has used the ECC-sonde together with the RS80 radiosonde. H. Dier (DWD-MOL) February 2004
